Different Styles of Picket Fences

Picket fences are one of the most popular and common style of fence in the United States of America. This type of fence has been used since America’s colonial era. Picket fence styles are short or high with a pointed or flat top and have an even distance among other vertical boards. There are different picket fence styles which are usually based on the outside lawn or the outlook of the house or just by the choice of the owner.

One of the picket fence styles is the simple picket fence. This is the most common among picket fence styles. The measurement of every vertical board is even and same in distance from each other. Usually it is in the board where the picket fence styles matter. There are four known picket fence styles. They are dog ear, flat top, French gothic and gothic.

Dog ear has a semi rounded top and does similarly look like the ear of a dog. Here are some of the ways in creating dog ear of picket fence styles.

  • Clamp the board together and make it sure that it is tight in order to have an even cut for each side of the board.

  • Cut the right side of the board in a 45-degree angle. The measurement of the cut depends on how wide the board is. However, picket fences have a usual size of four to six inches. Therefore, it is advised to cut it four inches in a 45-degree angle. Repeat the same process on the other side of the board.

  • In doing dog ear picket fence, it is important that all sides that have been cut in a 45-degree angle are equal to other boards.

Flat top is one of the easiest and most common in picket fence styles. Flat top picket fence does not need cutting of edges. However, it is highly noted that all boards should be even in measurement in width. Although the outlook of this picket fence styles is quite flat and common, the beauty it will give is on the different style of installing it. There are several styles of installing a flat top picket fence.

  • Straight or even is what we always see. The top and bottom are evenly installed and has a common color of white.

  • Ascending or descending is also common in middle class houses. The boards are not even in height and it is up to you if you are going to install it ascending or descending.

French gothic picket fence styles look has a classical touch. Among picket fence styles, this is the one which is quite laborious in creating. This is usually installed by a professional and French gothic picket fence styles are ordered by bulk. Therefore, it is a must for you to know the size of the perimeter wherein you are going to install the French gothic fence styles in order to calculate the number of board to use.

Gothic fence styles are also common. This has the same look of a spear at the tip. Somehow same with dog ear but has a little left of flat portion on the tip. This type is also used in ascending or descending installation of picket fences.

The height of picket fences will depend on how tall the owner wants it to be. Some of them may be as tall as seven feet while some are shorter as three feet.
