How to Install Decomposed Granite

Decomposed Granite is one of the many paving materials that can be put in a driveway. In comparison to other materials, such as concrete, decomposed granite provides more natural appearance and beauty. Also, this is cheaper depending on how it is used.

There are different colors to which you can choose. Although the most common color is charcoal brown, tans and brown colors are also attractive, most especially if it is mixed with any other surrounding paving or wall materials.

Decomposed granite is made of small cut pieces of granite. Sizes are from a maximum of one fourth to a sandy consistency. This is a fairly fine mixture compared to other pavement materials.

The longevity of the decomposed granite depends on how it is installed. Decomposed granite can be installed in different ways. However, basically there are three common methods in installing decomposed granite.

Loose decomposed granite can be installed as a surface top of a four inch gravel driveway. Upon installing it above the gravel, it is then compacted in order for it to be stable. Among all different types of installation, this is considered as the cheapest and easiest. Also, the material is used alone and no other additives are used for installation.

Another installation is done by having the decomposed granite mixed with stabilizers into it. This installation creates an appearance which is more hard packed, but there are still a little bit of loose layer on its surface. This type of application is observed to last for about seven to ten years.

Decomposed granite with resin is also a type of application. Among all the applications, this is considered to have the hardest surface. However, the hardiness of the surface sometimes depends on where the granite comes from. The surface appearance on this application may somehow resemble asphalt application. This application is very effective on driveway with an inclining terrain. Compared to other types of application this is considered to last longer. It has an estimated life span of fourteen years.

Decomposed granite has different materials mixed to it in order to make it more durable and long lasting. Also, because of the different colors it has, mixing them gives out a rustic effect.

Even if decomposed granite is considered as one of the newest known applications in driveway path. This is preferred by many homeowners because it is very durable and needs less maintenance compared to other known applications. This is always seen on driveways where there are snowy seasons at it has been tested to last long even with different climates.

The price of decomposed granite depends on which of the three applications you are going to use. However, because it has to be ordered, some of the mixtures are already mixed. Lastly, the prices also changes depending on how you want it delivered to you. Although, the product itself is inexpensive, applying it requires the knowledge of a professional to which additional expenses is counted. However, if you prefer to do it yourself, it can be possible. You just have to make it sure that it has been installed correctly in order for it to be durable and will be able to last longer than expected.
