The Traditional Wood Fence Styles

Wood fence is a traditional kind of fence that is known to be economical and simple. There are several types of wood fence styles you can choose from.  It includes:

Privacy or stockade wood fence styles – This type of wood fence makes you feel safe and secured while providing enough defense from unnecessary entries of harmful neighboring animals.  It is a good parameter fence as it can clearly define property boundaries. This kind of wood fence styles gives protection against extreme weather condition.  Painting or staining your wood fence to match and harmonize with enclosed house or building can add and strengthen the life of the fence. Mostly made of wood pine and fir, the wood will last longer if fully treated with preservative but if it is left untreated early signs of deterioration such as warping, splitting and cracking will take its toll. Privacy wood fence styles are not as long lasting as the other wood fence styles.  However, installation is fast, cheap and easy as there are available preassembled panels in the market today. 

Spaced picket wood fence styles – This design is one of the most popular and traditional fence.  This kind of wood fence styles is sometimes known as a friendly fence because it provides spaces in between slats letting you see and be seen by neighbors and the passers by.  It also allows the wind to flow and pass freely.  Pine and cedar lumber are ideal to use on this kind of fence since it takes longer time to warp and split.  A treated lumber will be better to use to stand longer and withstand insect borers.  However, because you are the one installing it, you get the post and the rail side giving your neighbor the good and beautiful side. 

Semi-privacy wood fence styles – This kind of fence style allows a gap of one to three inches in between boards.  The structure gives you enough privacy you need with people seeing you from the small gaps.  This wood fence styles can still provide the privacy you need and the property boundaries you want to define.

Split rail or post-rail wood fence styles – This style is usually seen in the country and on farms.  You often see this wood fence styles in cowboy or western movies.  A post is erected every 8 feet to hold two or three parallel rails along the property boundary. Split rail is useful to enclose your livestock.  It defines the rustic beauty of the countryside panorama.

Putting up wood fence in whatever style you chose, needs a few basic materials for the construction alone. The basic components are:
Post – This is the basic foundation in installing a fence.  It is rooted firmly in the ground as it holds all the other materials in place.
           
Rails – These are the ones connecting one post to the other.  Usually they run in two or three parallels.  It is through these rails that panels are attached.
Panels – These are the main screening material.  The panels are the deciding component on what kind of wood fence styles you want to choose.  Except for the split rail wood fence styled, panels are the vertical component that defines the whole shape of the fence. 
Wood fence are easy and economical to put up.  In cases where deterioration set in on a panel, an available replacement can be obtained without changing the whole set of fence.
